THE TWS GUIDE
What does denier mean?
A practical guide to sheer, semi-opaque and opaque tights—and the difference they make to an outfit.

A cream dress and a delicate slingback ask for a different finishing touch than a plaid mini and camel coat. Black tights can work with both. The choice is whether you want them to recede, add a sheer veil, define the outfit or ground its layers.
Find your denier →Start with the number. Don't stop there.
Denier measures yarn weight: the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn. In hosiery, lower numbers generally point toward a finer, sheerer appearance; higher numbers generally point toward more coverage.
It is a useful guide, not an opacity percentage. Construction, color, finish and how the tights stretch on the wearer also affect the result.
Choose the effect, not just the number.
BARELY THERE · 12 DEN
Keep the outfit light.

A cream sheath and a delicate slingback leave room for a very sheer finish. The dress supplies the contrast; the pointed shoe keeps the shape simple. Hosiery can finish the outfit without becoming its strongest dark element.
For a light finishing touch, consider FALKE Shelina 12 in black. FALKE describes this style as ultra-sheer with a shimmering finish. “Barely There” describes the styling idea, not a promise of invisibility.
Choose this direction when you want the dress and shoes to lead. The idea is not to make the tights disappear, but to keep their contribution delicate.

Add a sheer veil of black.

A black turtleneck, charcoal pencil skirt and loafers make an easy starting point. Sheer black tights connect those familiar pieces while leaving the leg visible, rather than making the whole lower half look solid black.
FALKE Matt Deluxe 20 has a sheer, matte finish—a suggested pairing for the knit and pencil skirt. A neat tuck keeps the waist defined, and the slim loafer leaves the ankle open.
Choose this direction when you want black hosiery to change the mood of an everyday outfit without becoming its main feature. The clothes stay simple; the sheer layer brings them together.

Give tailoring a stronger outline.

The same black knit, charcoal pencil skirt and loafers return here, this time with a shaped one-button blazer.
FALKE Pure Matt 50 is a matte, semi-opaque option for this outfit. The more defined black leg becomes part of the outfit's structure, linking the charcoal skirt with the dark shoe.
The charcoal separates coordinate without needing to be an exact matching suit. Choose this direction when you want the hosiery to have more presence alongside structured clothes. Tailoring does not require 50 denier; this is one way to balance it.

Give heavier layers a clear foundation.

A plaid mini, cream cable knit and camel coat bring more texture and volume to the outfit. Opaque black tights give those layers a simple foundation, continuing into a black ankle boot.
For this layered outfit, consider FALKE Seidenglatt 80 in black, described by FALKE as opaque with a slight sheen. The brown-and-cream plaid connects the sweater and coat, while the shorter hem leaves a clear stretch of hosiery above the boot.
Keep the coat open and the knit neat at the waist so the skirt remains part of the outfit. Choose this direction when you want a definite dark base beneath more substantial layers—not simply because the number is higher.

Coverage is one choice. Finish is another.
The four pairs do not share the same finish. Matt Deluxe 20 and Pure Matt 50 are matte; Shelina 12 is shimmering, and Seidenglatt 80 has a slight sheen.
That is why the number should not make the whole decision. First choose the coverage you want, then decide whether the tights should stay visually quiet or catch the light. Opaque does not automatically mean matte, just as sheer does not automatically mean shiny.
A few things the number cannot decide.
What denier should I wear to work?
Start with your clothes and your workplace. Sheer black can keep a skirt outfit visually lighter; semi-opaque hosiery can give tailoring more definition. Neither replaces judgment about fit, hem length or the setting.
What about evening?
Choose coverage and finish separately. A sheer matte pair can stay understated; a little sheen can become part of the look. Going out does not require the sheerest pair.
Does 80 denier mean warm enough for winter?
Not by itself. Denier is a yarn measurement, not a temperature rating. Materials, construction and the rest of your clothing matter. The Anchor look illustrates visual balance, not cold-weather performance.
Is higher denier better?
Only for the effect you want. An opaque pair is not an upgrade from a sheer one, and the number alone does not guarantee durability or fit. These pairs do different jobs.
